The special discounted rate of $24/night for conference
attendees is an extraordinary value in the heart of the city. |
The J. Ira & Nicki Harris Family Hostel stands as
a symbol of Chicago's commitment to international exchange and understanding.
It serves the international and domestic travel community through
affordable accommodations and programs that help visitors truly
experience the city.
Visitors will find safe, friendly and inexpensive
lodging in mostly dormitory-style rooms offered separately to men
and women. Rest rooms and shower facilities are plentiful. A large
kitchen is provided for preparing meals adjacent to a dining room
with floor to ceiling windows. Services include an Information Center
staffed with volunteers that enable visitors to learn about educational
programs, events and attractions throughout the city; places to
call home or to go on the Internet; laundry facilities; and comfortable
lounge and meeting room spaces.
The hostel is housed in the historic, handsome 1886
George F. Kimball building which typifies the heavy timber loft
construction used extensively in rebuilding downtown Chicago after
the 1871 fire. The Chicago hostel is a recognized feature of the
Loop Retail Historic District, identified in 1998 by the National
Trust for Historic Preservation as "one of the most important and
intact turn-of-the-century downtown commercial districts in the
country." The property at one time housed the presses for the Encyclopedia
Britannica. Its location is ideal. A block from Grant Park and the
Buckingham Fountain on Chicagošs lakefront, the hotel is a very
short walk to shopping, the Art Institute, Harold Washington Library,
Orchestra Hall, Auditorium Theater, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium
and the famous Field Museum where Imagine Chicago's conference is
being held.
